At a large governmental organization we started with one scrum team, but it very quickly became clear that there was only one way to really make it work: Go big or go home. This talk will be about the challenges we faced in a organization that almost only works with third party (off site) contractors, a new way of working in a very political environment. We were successful to a point where higher level managers got nervous because they didn’t hear any complaints.

In a few years Spotify has grown from a small startup in Sweden to a pretty big company with more than 50 engineering teams in four different development offices on two different continents. Such rapid growth carries big challenges. How can we continue to improve our product at great speed, while growing the number of users, employees and supported platforms and devices? How do we stay lean and agile when we grow from a small startup to a big corporation? In this talk I will present how Spotify is addressing these challenges. I will talk about autonomous squads, tribes, chapters, guilds, hack weeks, and a lot of other ideas we’re experimenting with.

Instead of a common strategy of formalizing the processes around portfolio management we can use Portfolio Kanban to evolve our way of working with the portfolio. The approach bases on “start with what you have” principle. This means that it doesn’t provoke resistance. Also small, evolutionary changes are preferred over big-bang changes. On the top of that, using the method doesn’t require extensive effort, which increases the odds of sustaining its adoption in the long run.

Even more than being faster, stronger, and better, decision makers and technical teams rely on predictability to succeed. Kanban delivers greater predictability to existing development methods for new project development as well as maintenance and support work. Organizations are using kanban to successfully match their capabilities to their expectations and needs for reliable configuration management, product quality, effective deployment and delivery cadence. How do they maintain the flexibility to navigate the ever-changing business environment and still predictably deliver critical work?
By using measurement, formulas and a scientific approach to change management, we can balance the factors of observed capability, staffing, and delivery targets to achieve predictable outcomes. By analyzing and understanding the nature of the work we do, we can allocate our efforts appropriately. By being methodical in our approach to continuous improvement, we can minimize disruption and achieve lasting benefit.
